Six questions, five outcomes, no data leaves your phone — the whole thing runs in your browser and I never see a single answer. Answer as the version of you that exists at 1am, not the one who books dentist appointments.
the questions
-
1. It's 1am and you have nowhere to be tomorrow. What's happening?
- One lamp on, something slow playing, doing absolutely nothing on purpose
- Awake at the window with a coffee, watching the street do nothing
- Halfway through a project I started three hours ago and won't abandon
- Getting ready as though somebody is coming. Nobody is coming
- Out. Or about to be. It wasn't planned an hour ago
-
2. Pick a drink.
- Red wine, one glass, nursed for two hours
- Espresso. At this hour. Yes, on purpose
- Whatever's cold and in a can, drunk standing up
- Something in a proper glass with one enormous piece of ice
- Whatever the fourth one was. Nobody's counting
-
3. There's one photograph of you in a room. What does it look like?
- Soft, warm, out of focus at the edges, half a face
- Black and white, taken from behind, you didn't know
- Hard light, no smile, tattoos doing most of the talking
- Lit properly, jewellery on, chosen from about ninety takes
- Blurred, badly framed, and somehow the best one of the night
-
4. Someone says something rude to you in public.
- Nothing. A long pause. They fill it themselves and regret it
- Note it, say nothing, remember it for an unreasonably long time
- Answer flatly and honestly and let it land where it lands
- Be exquisitely polite in a way that is clearly worse than shouting
- Escalate immediately. It's a whole evening now
-
5. Pick a texture.
- Washed silk that's been slept in
- Cold glass with condensation running down it
- Worn leather with the creases gone pale
- Warm metal that's been against skin all evening
- Wet pavement under a streetlight at 3am
-
6. How does the night usually end?
- Slowly, on purpose, long after it should have
- Alone and entirely content about it, watching the sky change
- Abruptly, because you decided, and that's that
- With everything put away and the alarm set anyway
- It doesn't. It just becomes morning and you're still talking
the results
◇ Silk Hour
You do not rush and it unsettles people. Everything about you runs about twenty per cent slower than the room, from how you talk to how long you take to answer, and it reads as confidence whether or not that is what it is. You are the reason the evening went on longer than anyone planned.
◐ Smoke & Espresso
You watch. You have read the room within ninety seconds of entering it and you will mention none of what you noticed. Genuinely happy alone at 4am, which most people claim and almost nobody means. Quiet is not shyness in your case — it is a preference, and it is doing a lot of work.
✕ Ink & Iron
Direct to the point of being restful. You say the actual thing, you leave when you want to leave, and you have never once softened a sentence to make it go down easier. People find it abrasive for a week and then discover it is the only honest conversation they get all month.
✦ Gold Standard
Nothing about you is accidental, including the things engineered to look accidental. You know what suits you, you have known for years, and you will not be talked out of it by a trend. It looks effortless from the outside, which is the entire point and also a small lie you are entitled to.
★ Wildfire
No plan survives contact with you and none of them needed to. Every good story your friends tell has you somewhere in the second half of it, usually as the reason the night stopped being ordinary. You will not remember all of it. Everyone else will remember all of it.
